Creating a backyard that invites relaxation and fun can add real value to your home. Recently, we had the chance to install a custom putting green that not only enhances the space but also brings a touch of nature and style. This project combined a practical putting green with natural stone accents and fresh landscaping to create a backyard retreat anyone would enjoy.

Preparing the Space for a Putting Green

The first step in this project was to prepare the backyard area properly. We used a mini skid steer to grade the land and remove excess dirt. This machine made it easy to shape the space and create a smooth, even surface for the putting green. Proper grading is essential because it ensures good drainage and a level playing surface.

After grading, we laid down a non-woven geotextile fabric. This fabric acts as a barrier, preventing weeds from growing through the turf and helping to stabilize the base. On top of this, we compacted 5 inches of base material. This compacted base provides a firm foundation that supports the turf and keeps it looking smooth and professional.

Designing and Installing the Turf

With the base ready, we moved on to cutting and laying the turf. The design included three putting holes, each positioned to offer a fun challenge for players of all skill levels. We carefully cut the turf to fit the shape of the green and the surrounding fringe area.

The fringe was designed with a darker turf color to create contrast and highlight the putting surface. This subtle difference adds visual interest and helps define the green’s edges. The turf installation requires precision to avoid wrinkles or uneven spots, which can affect the putting experience.

Adding Natural Stone and Landscaping Features

To frame the putting green, we built a small retaining wall using Oklahoma Brown Dry Stack Stone. This natural stone adds texture and warmth to the backyard, blending beautifully with the green turf. The dry stack method means the stones are stacked without mortar, giving a rustic and natural look.

Next to the putting green, we created a small planting bed. This bed was filled with a mix of annuals and perennials, chosen for their color and seasonal interest. Fresh mulch covered the soil, helping to retain moisture and keep weeds at bay. We selected a natural triple ground mulch that complements the darker fringe of the turf, tying the whole design together.

Why Choose a Custom Putting Green?

A custom putting green offers more than just a place to practice golf. It transforms your backyard into a space for relaxation, exercise, and socializing. Here are some benefits:

  • Personalized design tailored to your space and preferences

  • Low maintenance compared to natural grass

  • Year-round usability regardless of weather conditions

  • Increased property value through enhanced landscaping

  • Natural stone accents add durability and aesthetic appeal

Tips for Maintaining Your Putting Green

To keep your putting green looking great, regular maintenance is key. Here are some simple tips:

  • Brush the turf regularly to keep fibers upright

  • Remove debris like leaves and twigs promptly

  • Rinse the turf occasionally to clear dust and dirt

  • Check the edges and seams for any lifting or damage

  • Refresh mulch in planting beds annually to maintain appearance

Bringing It All Together

This backyard putting green project shows how combining functional design with natural materials can create a beautiful outdoor space. The careful grading, quality base, and precise turf installation ensure a smooth putting surface. Meanwhile, the Oklahoma Brown Dry Stack Stone wall and fresh planting beds add character and charm.

If you’re thinking about upgrading your backyard, consider a custom putting green with natural stone accents. It’s a practical and stylish way to enjoy your outdoor space more fully.
